The George Ryga Papers

George Ryga, the author of Canada’s best known English-language play, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, is one of Canada’s most prolific authors. In addition, he has written 190 plays, two cantatas, five screenplays, two long-playing albums, three novels and a book of poetry.

Ryga believes that indigenous theatre is as essential “as potatoes and electricity” to the positive growth of a nation and has shown vociferous support for a quota system for government-subsidized theatres in order to provide extensive opportunities for Canadian playwrights.

The George Ryga Papers, assembled in book form by the University of Calgary Press, cover Ryga’s activities from 1944 to 1988, and include poetry, short stories, novels, feature film screenplays, radio and television scripts, stage plays, musical works, essays and public addresses.

Suffragette City: The Fighting Days

In the play, Francis Beynon, who is passionately antiwar, clashes with Nellie McClung over military conscription, and over McClung’s position that the vote should be withheld from “non-Empire” immigrant women during the war.

Shivani: Is Olson the major figure in American poetry after Pound?

McClure: I do not like seeing poetry as literature rather than art and I’m not happy with the separation of Poetry and the sister arts, I prefer to see Art as Art. I perceive that a major figure after Pound would be Jackson Pollock, and instead of looking at “American” Poetry as William Carlos Williams exhorted all to do, I would look worldwide at the poetry of D.H. Lawrence, Federico Garcia Lorca, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and of course Charles Olson, and all.
